Cata Dungeons: The Basics in Dungeons

E-mail Print PDF

Gah, typical.  Yesterday I knew everything I wanted to put in this post but work was kinda busy so decided I'd write it today.  Woke up this morning and guess what.... complete brain fart.  Can't remember half of it.  But being British and having a stiff upper lip about it all I shall soldier on and attempt to read everything I read the past week that gave me such great ideas for this post.

Damn you ageing memory lobes.

OK guys today we're going to look at what us, as mages, should be doing when we're running in Cataclysm 5-man Dungeons.  What should we be doing?  What are things that are really going to annoy the other classes, especially the tank?  What can we do to help alleviate those annoyances?  What tools are available to help us help everyone else?

Know The Tactics - Know The Plan

OK this is the most basic thing and I'm sure most, if not all of you, already know the tactics for the Cataclysm dungeons and their heroic versions.  But do you really know them?  Yes, OK on General Umbriss you know to move (blink) out the way of his charge attack and to kill the troggs asap, especially the purple one.  But have you considered kiting the purple trogg over to a corner and polymorphing it?  If you polymorph it then no more purple troggs get summoned because the sheep still counts as an active add (the other troggs will still get summoned).  It's a lot easier than have to switch off the boss and panic dps everytime a new trogg pack gets summoned - you've already got him packaged up in the corner and you re-sheep as necessary.

In SFK HC, you do know you can Iceblock to avoid Asphyxiate on the first boss right?  Twice if you have Cold Snap.

You know that you can use Slowfall to help mitigate the fall damage caused by some tornado attacks that hurl you up in the air - say in the Altairus fight.

You know in Vortex Pinnacle you can use Ring of Frost to freeze up those Skyfall Stars, which at least goes some way towards lessening the damage caused by the headlong charge into the middle of them.

Of course that leads me on to the next point - communicate.  If you plan to Ring of Frost those annoying Stars, tell the tank before he rushes in.  If you're gonna sheep the purple trogg - tell the other DPS before they start trying to burn it down.

And for God's sake, follow the marks - follow the kill order. Tell the tank right at the start of the instance that you're sheeping the big silver moon mark - believe it or not many people don't know the 'established' mark system and just start using their own.  This has led me to sheep the moon only to have the <insert random class> and Tank yell 'WTF, moon was for <insert random CC>'.  Moon is for Polymorph, either inform those that don't know or ask for an explanation of the marks the tank is using.

Always have a plan!

Sharing The Mage Love

E-mail Print PDF

Oh yes, a double whammey of posts today.  I normally don't like doing this as I like to give people time to read and digest my articles; however, these are more of 'update posts' that I feel I should share with you guys just in case you haven't stumbled upon them yourselves.

First up, you guys need to check out Vidyala's Cataclysm Heroic Tips and Strategies for Mages Part One and Part Two over at Manalicious.  They're are extremely good and been extremely well received so far; in fact Part One was featured on the Daily Quest at WoW Insider (GZ Vidyala).

Update: Vidyala has done Part 3 as well; brilliant work and definitely should be read.

If you're in need of more general (although slightly tank slanted), non-Mage strategies for Heroics then please have a look at the Cheat Sheets over at Sword and Board; written by Vidyala's guild mate IdKittens.

Part 1 - Blackrock Caverns and Throne of Tides
Part 2 - Stonecore and Vortex Pinnacle
Part 3 - Grim Batol and Halls of Origination

Part 4 - Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep

Hmmm seems to be a definite Draenei theme going on in that there guild, still Alliance don't have the option of Tauren or Troll awesomeness so I guess they have to settle with gypsy space goats :P

One of my two favourite Gnome Mages, Gazimoff, has posted about the Lazy and Self Entitled who hijack and besmirch the name of casuals everywhere.  Casual is NOT a Dirty Word.  Crevice is a dirty word, but casual isn't.

Update:  Gaz is working hard to keep us mages all on top form; here's another brilliant article at Mana Obscura dealing with Mage Stat Priorities.  I know I keep harping on about it but it's nice to see another venerable mage reaffirming that Int>Hit in Cataclysm.

Whilst I'm at it - once again I urge you to join up and browse around the Mage Forums on Mana Obscura; fantastic people playing some fantastic mages and anyone hoping to glean a bit of knowledge (or just discuss how awesome us mages are) would do well to take a poke about.

Right, that's all done.  Time for tiffin I think.  Bug fixing still ongoing ;)

Mage Hotfix - 03 Jan

E-mail Print PDF

Good morning guys, and what an absolutely splendiferous morning it is.  I've had my morning cup of brown joy (that's a cup of tea by the way) and read the Telegraph over breakfast.  But real news is boring, so after I'd finished pretending I was a responsible adult I jumped on to MMO Champion to read the latest hotfix notes and lo and behold there was something for mages - hurrah.

"What's the craic then Runz?" I hear you ask in a loud chorus.  Well....

Flame Orb and Frostfire Orb no longer break any version of Polymorph.

Yep, it's pretty awesome cos now I can actually use the damn spell against trash packs where I'm required to CC, cos let's face it there aren't many tanks you get in PuGs that bother to drag the pack away from CC'd mobs.  What I don't know is whether that applies to just the Polymorph spell specifically or whether that includes the likes of Hex.

OK normally I don't write stuff about patch notes or anything but I felt compelled this morning and I might make it a regular thing just to help spread the word.

Anyhoo have a great day guys, hopefully I shall have a lengthier 'proper' article up soon but I'm just trying to fix some bugs on the site and implement some things that I hadn't got round to yet (did you see the shiney new Blogroll thingey over on the right?).

/cast Ritual of Refreshment
/drink Tetley's Extra Strong Tea - it's far too early in the morning for anything less XD

Somewhat Belated Season's Greetings

E-mail Print PDF

Yeah, I know I'm kinda late but some of us have to work you know, and finish gearing properly..... and play Dwarf Fortress when the internet is down/causing lag.

Runz & MiniRunz bringing in the yuletide spirits

I really do hope everyone had a great Christmas and you all have some great parties to go to on New Year's Eve.  Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read this blog over the past six months and my New Year's resolution is to expand it and make it even better (other resolutions include; finish the guild video, not to drown my dwarves in Dwarf Fortress by accidently mining into a lake, make more effort to clean the house for Mrs Runz when I'm home and to be the bestest mage going).

Thank you to my guildies in Darkened; thank you for being such a fantastic bunch of people who make me smile everytime I'm online.  Thanks for putting up with my ridiculous hijacking of gchat with capitalised greetings to and from everyone.  Many, many thanks for giving an old senile mage a home for the past year and a half and thank you for enduring my epic lag fests that usually involving me standing stock still in the fire, missing an interrupt and doing less DPS than the healer.  Your understanding of the tremendous issues I have in gaming whilst away and your willingness to still do your best to help me out is nothing short of a true testament to the friendliness and awesomeness of the guild.

Finally, my biggest thank you to Mrs Runz.  Thank you for giving me two gorgeous, amazing boys; for putting up with my myriad of foibles, for sticking with me through the rough times and good.  I could ask for no better person to spend my life with; you are my greatest love and my very best friend.

All the best and see you in the New Year
