The Sunday Service: Welcome Congregation

E-mail Print PDF

Hello and welcome to the Sunday Service here at the St Metzen Cathedral of Dalaran, I will be your magely spiritual guide as we take a look at some of the blogs from our wonderful community this week.  So without further ado, let us have some readings from the congregation.

General

The Grumpy Elf is spreading the Good News, the good news being that WoW has lost another 800,000 subscribers.  Of course The Grumpy Elf goes on to explain exactly why that is good news when you bother to look at the big picture.

Zellviren at Piercing Howl asks you to repent your evil ways or be banished from Azeroth forever.  Taking what appears to be a slightly elitist tone which I'm usually against, Zellviren goes on to explain why it is better for you to learn how to play your class than it is for Blizzard to nerf the content to accommodate your low skill level.  Zellviren took a lot of flak for posting a rather frank and honest opinion but I must admit, the case is argued well although addendums in the comments are more accurate that perhaps you should be banished from the raid progression group rather than the whole of Azeroth lol.

Gazimoff from Mana Obscura has an important reading regarding the great unknown, specifically the Unknown Warcraft Subscriber and how that unknown makes hypotheses of the factors for a decline in WoW subscriber numbers something akin to subjective opinion rather than fact supported objective analysis.

Stubborn at Sheep the Diamond returns us to an Age of Innocence and asks at what point do we lose our innocence in an MMO.  Let he hath not theorycrafted cast the first stone.

Mage

Vidyala at Manalicious has been exceptionally busy this week with not one, not two, but three readings prepared for us.  Hallelujah as some of my less reserved American counterparts might say.  Sometimes it feels as though it is easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle than it is to get into a decent raiding guild, well not when you have Vidyala's excellent advice on How To Get Into That Heroic Raiding Guild You've Always Wanted.  I think the title explains it all there.  Vidyala also asks us to watch out for our Arcane Brethren, and let them not follow the flock to the falsely prophesied cookie cutter spec like so many other sheep.  Finally Vidyala has kindly agreed to head this year's Winter Dance committee for the parish and has provided a list of suitable attire for Mages attending this year when Patch 4.3 is released. Vidyala is also in charge of tea and cookies after the service.

PvP

Finally, this parish is only too aware of conflict in Azeroth.  That's Cynwise at Cynwise's Battlefield Manual wants us all to be prepared for when the next Arena season starts and has prepared a handy guide for all the parishioners.

Well that concludes this week's service, I do hope you will all join us again next week.  This week we will close with the traditional prayer:

Our Metzen, who art at Blizzard

Hallowed be thy buffs

Your nerfs will come, your class balance done

In Lordaeron as they are in Kalimdor

Give us this day our Daily Quests

And forgive us our QQs

As we have also forgiven the ninjas

And lead us not into temptaion

But deliver us from gold sellers

For thine is the MMO, the power and the Nerf Mallet

Forever and ever

Amen

NB.  This is actually a competition at the end of this blog article so I hope you all join in.

It started off as an innocent look at an interesting article over at Flavour Text regarding ponies, and in particular the My Little Pony Pony Creator and how it's ability to let you create your own pony translates into self created fan art and a self created digital identity.  This, of course, was was the result of a large twitter conversation amongst bloggers in which many many ponies were created based on their WoW characters.  Norm at Flavour Text hit a really interesting point; that between the set number of models in WoW and the fact that nearly everyone is wearing the same sort of gear it's easy to feel a bit like a clone hero and that often our own imagination has a far deeper visual image for our avatars.  Unfortunately, unless you're a good artist or enjoy writing fan fiction it can very very hard to convey how you view your character in your mind's eye into your gaming within WoW.

And so enter the Pony Creator...

Just One More 'OP' Post in the Mage Forums and I Swear.....

E-mail Print PDF

EDIT: I should perhaps clarify that I am referring to the EU Mage Forums, not the US forums.  In fact, on my rare visits to the US forums the reverse seems to be true; ie. other classes are supporting the idea that mage damage is not great atm even in Arena and many of the roots are negate by the number of interrupts and dispells available in the game.  I have no idea whether this is because the US servers have a larger PvP player base and therefore more people actually know what they're talking about over there or whether it's just a general difference in mindsets between EU and US players.  Anyway, go look there - it's quite enlightening and kinda makes me wish I could post on their forums to say hi.

If I read one more post in the Mage forums about 'OMG MAGES R SO OP, NERF NAO' and I swear to the Loa I will not be responsible for my actions.  Everytime I see one of these threads I die a little inside and my eyes begin to bleed.  There are a lot of things that really bug me about this attitude towards Mages being posted up in the Blizzard class forums, so in a therapeutic rant I'm going to mention it here.  But I will also touch on posting in appropriate forums and why PvP class players should look at themselves and what they're doing before they start hijacking another class's forum to rant.

1)  All these complaints (and I mean literally all these complaints) come from the PvP community.  Now I'm not against PvP, I happen to enjoy it a great deal whether I'm winning or losing.  But let's be realistic here - World of Warcraft is, at its very heart, a PvE game.  Initially there were no battlegrounds, no arenas, no real items of PvP gear.  These things were added later to appease a small section of the player base.  That's cool and all but let's not get ahead of ourselves here; the vast majority of players subscribe for PvE content.  Major patches and expansion are all about PvE content.  Although there are a great many things I would like to see with regard to PvP (Alterac Valley not being a glorified dungeon run and some good old fashioned world PvP making a return), I would never suggest ruining PvE content for the sake of PvP but this is what most of these PvP whiners seem to want.

Mages in PvE are sort of mediocre at the moment, they're not bad - in fact some very good players are still extremely competitive in terms of DPS - but for many we're in the middle of the pile.  I have no problem with this as such, it inspires me to improve as much as I can, but when you combine this with PvE survivability and with other ranged DPS vastly outclassing us and not having the survivability issues well that's a little bit cheeky (I'm looking right at you Hunters).  But hey, we're all on the same team so meh.  So when some PvP comes crying on my class forum that Mages should be nerfed I get really annoyed.  Yes take the mediocre PvE ranged DPS class and nerf them because all that matters is your PvP team rating so you can wave your gigantuan epeen around.  GTFO you egregious little turd!

2) This is the MAGE CLASS FORUM!!!!  Take your Huntard or Warrior opinion elsewhere.  If you have a genuine, serious complaint about another class post it up in an appropriate forum.  I would suggest, oooo I don't know, maybe THE FUCKING PVP FORUM!!!!!!!1111!!!!!oneexclamationmark!

I go on the Mage forum to read up on my class, to find out about more resources; gear, enchant, gem and spell rotation optimisation.  So I get really pissed when I have to scroll through pages of your self-absorbed whining in my class forum.  DO I go to your class forum and complain about DK AMS? Or Hunter auto-shot?  Or the fact that a Warrior can eat us if they have Recklessness and decide to smack us about with Colossal Smash and Throw Down?  No I don't, I accept that there are some classes that I have to be wary of and adapt my strategy accordingly - I don't sit and bitch about it cos I'm not getting my own way in some other class's forum.

Spamming your unrelenting shite in the Mage forum is going to get you nowhere.

You hear that???  That noise gently drifting in the wind coming from far far away?  That's the world's smallest god damn violin playing just for you fella.  And guess what?  It's playing in your class forum so you best go listen to it there.

3) If you are going to disparage another class because you consider them OP, please at least be constructive if your post.  I have no problem (and actually enjoy) reading post that sensibly discusses class mechanics and where things can be improved, balanced or re-thought.  I'm not arrogant enough to believe that my PvP awesomeness prior to patch 4.0.6 was all down to me - I play Frost and I was aware that in terms of PvP it's a good class to play (btw that's not why I play it - I didn't play as Frost in Wrath and I only switched over in Cata because I like the play style).  I was not adversed to sensible posts about how to rebalance some of the issues with Frost in PvP.  Diminishing Returns, a shrinking of Ring of Frost, rebalancing Frostbolt and Ice Lance - none of this was a problem and I believe at least some of this came from sensible, well thought out and constructive posts made in the forum.

But you know what isn't constructive?  OMFG NERF MAGES NAO!!!  ust given the Blizzard development team some wonderful new insight into class balancing but you sir are clearly a moron. (wanna read the rest of this rant? click the title or the read more button).

Community Building At Runzwithfire

E-mail Print PDF

I send an email out about this to those who are registered on the site, but I wanted to throw it open to everyone.  Basically I have this whole membership function that is woefully underused at the moment; some of you have joined and regularly sign in but really there's nothing to entice you to do so.  Comments can be made without signing in using name, email, url & kapcha (although there is slightly increased functionality for those signed in), and the avatar image used is Gravatar (which is also tied into wordpress).  Basically, what I'm thinking is that there should be a reason for actually registering on the site and signing in; problem is I am completely flummoxed as to what what should be.  So I'm gonna throw it open to you guys so you can tell me what you want.

What would you like to be greeted with when you sign in?  Should there be forums?  Should there be a members chat room?  How about a Shoutout Box on the front page?  What about a little area with some flash games (an arcade if you will)?  What about an Art Gallery where members can sumbit their works for the viewing pleasure of other members?  Should I be offering more competitions and offers for members (I know that sounds really cheesey and a charmless ploy to attract more people but you know what I mean, I want to be able to give back to the community.  You lot may be mostly silent but I know you're there and you keep coming back so yay).  I honestly don't know if any of this is of interest to you guys so that's why I'm throwing it out there to see what you want.  After all, for those that took the time to register I can't help but feel like I'm kinda selling you short, cos you have no extra functionality compared to anyone else visiting the site.

I'm keen not to reinvent the wheel here though, for example Gaz over at Mana Obscura already runs the fantastic Mage Forums which I really suggest you support so if we're looking at forums let's try and keep away from an already established class forum etc.

So here's the poll...

What Functions Would You Like To See On Runzwithfire

Obviously if there's anything else you want to add or suggest please do put it in the comments section below or email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  - or even if you have any other ways to improve the site or any issues with browsers or anything just let me know.  I don't bite, honest!

And Now For Something Completely Different...

Just something else that sprang to mind the other night whilst I was waiting for Shogun 2 to download... I'm on Steam guys - guess my gamer tag, go on guess it, bet you can't.

Runzwithfire, you say?  Bugger, guess I'm a little too predictable.

Yes Runzwithfire is on Steam (he has been for a while actually) so please feel free to drop in and say hi.  I'm also looking for people to join a Shogun 2 clan and to start up Magicka groups with.  Nothing serious, just fun - honestly I don't care about winning, it's just a giggle on games other than WoW.  In fact WoW is really the only game I devote a whole lot of effort towards 'winning' by theorycrafting and optimisation, anything else is just for, well it's for Shits and Giggles.  Besides we're all separated on different servers in WoW, so it'd be nice to have the opportunity to play something with the people who come here and read but who I'll never get a chance to raid with.

If there's enough people interested I'm set up a Steam group too.  Any suggestions for the Shogun Clan name or the Steam Group name are appreciated - I'm putting forward Runzy's Angels or the Runzlettes right now XD

Spreading More Blog Love

E-mail Print PDF

I know most people come here to read about Frost PvE and Stat ratings and all that goodness.  I don't know how many people come and read my other stuff really but I know from my popularity meters on pages that it is usually a fraction of the number looking at the mage/frost guides (about 1/4 to 1/3). So with that in mind I don't know how many people really will look over this but meh - it's time to share some blog love.  If I manage to direct just one person to these wonderful resources then I've done a good job (thankfully when it comes to blogging I am my own boss so I get to decide what constitutes a good job OK!).  As always, click on the Read More button below to discover these wonderful resources!
